Leaving for College? Advice from good Ol' Polonius.

Polonius is full of advice to give to Laertes as he leaves for college. Polonius is a oblivious man whose advice is for the most part crazy, but has some truth to it. Polonius is trying to give Laertes life lessons in only five minutes. He tells him to dress well, but not ostentatiously. To hear what everyone has to say, but only state your ideas to a few you trust. He says you shouldn't try to please everyone, it will wear you out. This advice isn't the best you could give someone going off to college, but it is not awful. One piece of advice that Polonius gives Laertes that I would follow would be "This above all: to thine own self be true..." (1.3 ln 82). I believe that this quote holds a lot of truth. You should always be yourself, no matter the situation. If you lie to other people about who you are, it will make you more miserable in the long run. I think this would be good advice for parents today to give their kids.

Our senior class is getting ready to embark on the next part of our life: college. We are finishing up our applications, deciding where we want to go, and psyching ourselves up for the end of our senior year. While we are getting excited to leave and start this new adventure, our parents are worrying about losing us even though some may not be going that far away. With their kids leaving, they want to give us advice, to remember and help keep us safe. The best advice parents can give their kids is to be smart, get involved, keep their grades up, and be safe. Kids hear these things constantly in their life, but in order to have a good college experience, they are things you need to follow.

  1. This is very true. I do believe that you should always stay true to yourself, even if you want to fit into a certain group. Like you said, every parent wants to send their child out into the cruel world without trying to warn them somehow. There is not much you can tell a teenage/adult since, they will only listen to what they want to hear. And Polonius trying to tell Laertes some last tips, was useless in my book.

  2. I do believe it probably most important to always remain yourself. Knowing that at any point your past could come back to haunt you and possibly destroy the "new" you. For the most part I would agree that the advice is a tad to much, but it is advice that you should definitely follow and be sure to understand.
